How to Watch Baseball
1. Each baseball game has nine innings.
They can get quite long, which is why baseball is one of the best games to watch socially. You have plenty of time to chit chat and grab drinks. Just be on the lookout for the following few things.
2. When a pitcher is throwing, watch for how good his pitch is.
His best case scenario is he pitches the ball right to the batter but the batter misses it. That's a strike against the batter. His second best scenario is he pitches the ball poorly and it goes off center, but the batter swings anyways and misses. That's a strike. If the batter hits the ball out of bounds, that's a strike. Three strikes and the batter's out. As the batter, it's important to judge whether or not the pitch will be good. Because if it's a bad pitch and the batter doesn't swing, then it counts against the pitcher. This is called a "ball". Four balls and the batter gets to walk to first base.
3. When the batter starts running, watch for other ways to get him out.
After the batter hits the ball and it stays in bounds, there are several ways to get him out. If the other team catches the ball before it lands on the ground, that's an out. If the other team tags him while holding the ball, that's an out. If the other team reaches the base he's trying to reach while holding the ball, that's an out.
4. Watch for players trying to steal bases.
Usually when a player is on one of the bases, he waits for his teammate who is batting to hit the ball and then he runs for the next base. Sometimes, he may want to steal a base. That is, while the pitcher is winding up for a pitch, he tries to make it to the next base.
5. Finally, watch for the home runs.
The fan love home runs. When a batter hits the ball and it flies beyond the wall opposite him, it's a home run. This is when the batter uses all the techniques he's mastered and a little of luck to wow the crowd.
