What You Need to Know This NBA Season
Updated: April 15, 2017
1. it's playoffs time!
The season started in October 2016, and the playoffs just began on April 15th. Playoff games will take place between now and the beginning of June, when the NBA Finals will determine this year's champion.
2. the Eastern Conference playoffs
Surprise! The Boston Celtics are the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, while the Cleveland Cavaliers are the No. 2 seed. The Cavs won the NBA championship title last season, and they were sitting at the top of the rankings for most this season. They would have locked up the No. 1 seed if they didn’t rest their best players during Monday’s game against the Miami Heat. So why did they? The theory is the Cavs projected which teams they would meet in each round of the playoffs as the No. 1 seed or as the No. 2 seed, and the No. 2 seed looked like the path of less resistance to the finals.
3. the Western Conference playoffs
The clear favorite to win the Western Conference is the Golden State Warriors. They’ve won the conference championship and made it to the NBA Finals two years in a row, and they have an even stronger team this year. As long as their best players stay healthy throughout the playoffs, they have a good chance of making it to the Finals again. The only team that may present a challenge is the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs have had an amazing season, trailing closely behind the Warriors.
4. the biggest rivalry
The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors are the hottest teams. They are also the most likely teams to make it to the NBA Finals based on their performances so far this season and the talents on their teams. If this comes true, then it'd be the third consecutive time these teams meet in the Finals. In 2015, the Warriors won. In 2016, the Cavaliers won, in an epic comeback. The Warriors had won three out of seven games in the Finals series when the Cavaliers took back control and won three consecutive games. Who knows what's going to happen this year?!
5. the Russell Westbrook
Throughout the whole season, everyone was eagerly anticipating Russell Westbrook's new NBA record. He finally did it on April 9th. He broke the record for most triple-doubles in one season. What is a triple-double? In each game, a player's performance is measured by many stats, such as points, assists, rebounds, etc. The previous record is 41 triple-doubles in one season, set by Oscar Robertson in 1962. Westbrook finished the season with 42 triple-doubles.
